Raton Basin
Welcome to the Raton Basin

The Raton Basin, covering an area of approximately 2,200 square miles in central Colorado and northern New Mexico, has been a source of energy development, including coal mining and coal bed methane, for many years.

The Raton Basin, located within Las Animas County, is home to a strong agricultural community that utilizes the local water resources to continue their agricultural operations.  The energy operators who are active within the basin and county are charged with ensuring their operations do not degrade water quality.

This website provides information about water wells, water monitoring and protection, produced water uses, depletion modeling relative to coal bed methane production and hydraulic fracing within the Raton Basin.
