Raton Basin
Welcome to the Raton Basin

The Raton Basin, covering an area of approximately 2,200 square miles in central Colorado and northern New Mexico, has been a source of energy development, including coal mining and coal bed methane, for many years.

The Raton Basin, located within Las Animas County, is home to a strong agricultural community that utilizes the local water resources to continue their agricultural operations.  The energy operators who are active within the basin and county are charged with ensuring their operations do not degrade water quality.

This website provides information about water wells, water monitoring and protection, produced water uses, depletion modeling relative to coal bed methane production and hydraulic fracing within the Raton Basin.

  • 2014 Arkansas River Basin Water Forum

Planning and Planting for the Future

    Otero Junior College Student Center

    1802 Colorado Avenue

    La Junta, CO  81089

Each year the Forum Core-Committee recruits a new host from within the Basin to help plan the Forum. This tradition ensures that Forum broadens relationships throughout the Arkansas Basin, which is spatially the largest river basin in Colorado covering 27% of the State's area (28,268 sq. mi.). Our goal has been to have the Forum in the Upper Basin on even years and the Lower Basin during odd years. Some years, the Forum is held in locations that are not on the main stem of the Arkansas River.

The 2014 Forum Planning Committee has assembled a program focused on:

    • Different perspectives on Colorado's Water Plan (see Colorado Water Plan)
    • The Basin Implementation Plan for the Arkansas (followed by onsite survey)
    • Agricultural Water Use in the Arkansas River Basin
    • The Importance of Agriculture to Southeastern Colorado
